Jesse Eisenberg, star of The Social Network, recognized Sovereign | Santander Bank as a pioneer in crowdsourcing at the 58th Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity. Heading a jury of media critics and international ad executives, Eisenberg selected an original piece of work, ‘The Keeper’, created for Sovereign | Santander bank as the Grand Prix winner of a global video contest.
“Crowdsourcing is breaking new ground in corporate marketing and we’re delighted that Sovereign l Santander, as the first bank to participate in MOFILM competition, took the prestigious Grand Prix on its initial collaboration.” said Jeffrey Merrihue, CEO and co-founder, MOFILM, the world’s largest creative department. “The scope of winning films, along with the hundreds of entries from over 40 countries, demonstrates how exploring different ways of approaching a challenge can unearth totally new and innovative concepts,” he added.
Leading up to Cannes, hundreds of aspiring filmmakers submitted short vignettes on themes created by well-known brands, including Coke Zero, Chevrolet, AT&T and Microsoft. The participating companies worked with MOFILM, a leading crowdsourcing agency, to create a brief, which was then promoted to the MOFILM global community of filmmakers and beyond. Each participating brand selected their top five films and the first place winners from each were flown to the south of France for a glamorous beachside award ceremony. During the ceremony, each winning video was shown to the audience of advertising, filmmaker and marketing insiders, before the jury selected the Grand Prix.
The winning film for Sovereign l Santander’s was ‘The Keeper’, created by Chris Bailey and Jake Naish from Atlanta, Georgia. ‘The Keeper’ is a whimsical documentary-style short about a man who scrapbooks statements. “When we make financial transactions, like buying things on plastic, we don’t always stop to think about what these transactions mean to us,” said Eduardo Tobon CEO US Cards & Payments of Sovereign l Santander. “But our film showed that every transaction says something about who we are, and that there is a life story in every monthly statement we receive. I think that this idea resonated with Jesse Eisenberg and the other judges.”
