these look good.

/ April 19, 2011He looks good but still not sure if I want to see the film. I find the premise too out there for my taste, and I am not familiar with the work of any of his co-stars. I did try to watch Danny McBride’s HBO show and it’s not my thing at all. Hope they release a trailer soon…

/ April 19, 2011My feelings on 30MOL:
I watched some bits of Your Highness starring Franco, Portman and Danny McBride and I can’t say I liked Danny’s performance…
But on the good side, after all it’s Ruben Fleischer directing, the script is supposed to be good (it was on the Black List) and Jesse works well with Ruben. Zombieland was breathtakingly hilarious, a really special comedy. If they keep up standards it’ll definitely be good.
Having said that, Zombieland had a beautifully wierd cast and I think some of the funniest parts are due to their totally unexpected electrical interaction… I am not so sure about the characters & cast of 30MOL. I don’t like Aziz Ansari as an actor based on what little I’ve seen of his performances.
Also, for some reason, even though the plot sounds fine (for all its wierdness it’s based on a true story that’s even more crazy), I don’t feel the characters very special.
Esp. the best friend and the whole being in love with best friend’s sister thing… that bit sounds so stereotypical.
I also can’t help thinking the 2 bullying antagonists sound rather idiotic. A purposedly idiotic and clownish antagonist is not a plus, in my opinion anyway.
But hopefully I’ll be completely wrong and all the things hanging in favour of the film being a success will carry it through…
I’ll be watching it, anyway, just to see how Jesse did.

/ April 20, 2011JuL, I agree, Ruben and Jesse worked well together in “Zombieland,” and I think Jesse agreed to do this because he wanted to work with him again.
While I do think the whole idea of this movie is a gamble, especially if they are releasing this during the summer where it will compete with big-budget summer films, I still admire Jesse for having the guts to take on such a risky project (no big stars, weird plot, etc.). Hope the risk pays off! But I fear a “Your Highness” part 2 here.

/ April 20, 2011@cecille, I think it’s probably a mutual attraction between Ruben and Jesse LOL! Ruben was very appreciative of Jesse’s work in Zombieland, going so far to say some of the funniest parts of film were due to Jesse’s improvs…
As for the summer gamble. 30MOL is scheduled to be released in mid-August, the competition around that time might not be all that bad – see here: http://www.laineygossip.com/Summer_Movie_Preview_2011_Written_by_Sarah_08apr11.aspx?CatID=1115&CelID=0
Of all those major flicks hitting theatres in August, nothing really interests me…. July is altogether a more exciting month. Among the comedies in August, 30MOL actually looks like the most possible win.

/ April 20, 2011as for taking risks, I don’t know
:D Does Jesse care about working with big stars or not? With his whole independent movie demeanor… he’s probably used to taking projects that look risky. (Also, he signed on to 30MOL before TSN, unless I got it wrong?)
Personally, I actually don’t mind the plot weirdness so much (just found out I’ve spelt weird all wrong this whole time XDD) myself. Something out of the stereotype is nearly always good. The only thing I fear is stereotype. The weirdness at least serves to avoid predictability and keeps some interest in the storyline…
My biggest worry is the characteisation might not be interesting or attractive. (Jesse has this ability to make any seemingly unloveable role endearing, but still, what about the rest of the characters.)

/ April 21, 2011“I find the premise too out there for my taste”
@Cecile
Even though this movie is a comedy and the plot seems a bit off the wall the premise has actually happened:
ERIE, Pa. – Federal and local authorities are investigating the case of a pizza deliveryman who was killed when explosives strapped to his neck detonated after he robbed a bank.
Brian Douglas Wells (search), 46, answered a delivery call Thursday to a mysterious address in a remote area and ended up at about an hour later at a bank wearing a bomb.
As the time bomb ticked tried in vain to convince police, who were waiting for the bomb squad to arrive, that he was forced into the crime, but died when the explosives detonated.

/ April 21, 2011Thanks for the info! The August movie schedule does seem wide open so I hope 30MOL does well. I agree, his choice of films have been unpredictable. It does not necessarily follow the conventional pattern to superstardom–no generic rom-coms or any of those kid-friendly fantasy-heavy movies. I guess that makes Jesse stand out from most young actors his age.
I am not that familiar with his character here but I read he’s a slacker and not-so-smart so that’s a change I guess. I also fear a stereotype but I believed that TSN proved he was more than a loveable nerd.

/ April 21, 2011*long rambling is long* *sorry*
yeah, Jesse is pretty much unique. In my eyes anyway
. He walked a largely independent path and never cared very much about picking heroic, romantically endearing roles…. never turned his nose up at playing unheoric or unpleasant people, in unlikely and unconventional settings.
(Some might say it wasn’t an option, it’s not like he could afford to be picky back then – but I think he never would be that kind of narcisstic picky, past or now or future.) That’s one of our biggest reasons for loving that guy isn’t it?
I also have very little idea of what Nick (protagonist of 30MOL) is going to be like… I’ve even heard someone described him as “dumb-wise guy” before, so there seem to be a whole range of interpretations among different people XD
My understanding of him is – I regret to say – a socially awkward guy who has only one friend in the world (who doesn’t think much of him), who apparently has a high opinion of himself but fails even at his sh-tty job, who isn’t very capable, and certainly doesn’t get much respect from anyone….
So I worry, yeah… how this is going to turn out. If this turns out to be another loveable next-door nerd I might want to kill somebody LOL.
In the end I suppose it all depends on how Jesse will work this role. I guess (in order to be fair to general) we could say it’s a complex character with a lot of seemingly contradictory qualities… maybe the confident slacker side will turn out, maybe the cowardly and down-in-the-world side will take over.
If the latter, there’s a huge chance of stereotyping. If the former, I’ll eat my own predictions and then celebrate. XDDD
judging by how brightly Jesse is smiling in those pictures I’m hopeful~
