New release date for ‘Rio’

Warner Bros.’ recent decision to push back the Steve Carell-Ryan Gosling comedy “Crazy, Stupid, Love” from Easter to July has opened up the release calendar for other studios to take advantage of the holiday weekend.

As a result, 20th Century Fox has moved its 3D animated comedy “Rio” from April 8 to April 15, and the Robert Pattinson-Reese Witherspoon period drama “Water For Elephants” from April 15 to April 22, two days before Easter Sunday.

Oscar winner Christoph Waltz co-stars in “Water for Elephants,” Francis Lawrence’s adaptation of Sara Gruen’s bestselling novel about a love triangle set in a 1930s circus.

Other films scheduled for release on April 22 include “Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Big Happy Family,” Columbia Pictures’ Nick Swardson comedy “Born to Be a Star” and the documentary “African Cats.”

“Rio” will have young audiences and families to itself, as the other movies slated to open on April 15 are “Scream 4″ and the indie drama “Soul Surfer.”

The film features the voices of likely Oscar nominee Jesse Eisenberg, Oscar co-host Anne Hathaway and Oscar winner Jamie Foxx, as well as comics George Lopez and Tracy Morgan.

Eisenberg plays Blu, a rare species of macaw from small-town Minnesota who takes off on an adventure to Rio de Janeiro to mate with the bird of his dreams (Hathaway) in order to save their species.
