Woody Allen’s ‘To Rome With Love’ Takes $3.7 Million in Italian Opening

The film, greeted by lukewarm reviews, unseats “Battleship” in its world premiere.

ROME — Woody Allen’s To Rome With Love took in €2.8 million ($3.7 million) in its opening weekend in Italy, making it the top-grossing film in the country and giving it the most successful opening-day total for any of Allen’s films in Italy.

To Rome received lukewarm reviews after its premiere in the Eternal City, where the film was shot, with some critics pouncing on what they said was a superficial take on the Italian capital.

But that didn’t keep the crowds away. To Rome took in more than the next five films in the rankings combined, and it more than tripled the box-office take of the previous weekend’s winner, the Peter Berg-directed sci-fi thriller Battleship, which earned $1.1 million, falling to second place in its second weekend of release. All told, To Rome was responsible for 20.5 percent of the overall weekend box office.

With its weekend take, To Rome surpassed the $2.9 million earned by Allen’s previous film, last year’s Midnight in Paris, in its opening weekend in Italy.

Allen, along with cast members Alec Baldwin, Penelope Cruz, Jesse Eisenberg and Roberto Benigni, was in Rome for the April 13 world premiere of the film, Allen’s seventh in as many years set in a major European city, following London, Barcelona, and Paris. While in Rome, Allen said he would return to the U.S. for his next film, shooting in New York and San Francisco.

To Rome is scheduled to open June 22 in the U.S. and across Europe later in the summer.

Jason Ritter talks about taking his pants off around Jesse

You seem to always take your pants off when you’re in a film with Jesse Eisenberg.

I guess the rule is, if I’m in a film with Jesse, I have to show my butt. It’s in his contract: I have to humiliate myself. He’s got a sick fascination with my butt. [Laughs] Maybe it’s a generational thing, but a lot of actors these days show their butts. It’s not like we’re trying to show our butts because it’s some terrible movie late at night on some weird channel like it used to be, but if our characters like to get naked, that’s representative of life. We’re holding up a mirror — to our butts. [Laughs]

Ellen Page talks about working with Jesse Eisenberg

In a new MTV interview, Ellen Page talks about working with Jesse Eisenberg on ‘To Rome With Love’:

MTV: You mentioned Woody Allen. He wrote, directs and stars in the film. What was it like working with him?

Page: Trippy. I feel like that would be the best way to put that. It’s a hard thing to really wrap your head around when it’s happening — to be standing on the golden, sunlit streets of Rome with Jesse, who’s so wonderful and such a talented actor. And then [there's] Woody Allen walking up to you to give you direction. It’s a very dreamlike feeling. I sort of forget that it even happened. It’s weird.

MTV: What was it like acting opposite Alec Baldwin and Jesse Eisenberg?

Page: They’re both awesome, and Greta Gerwig as well. We had such a great time together and Jesse is so kind and so down-to-earth. Alec and Greta as well. Just three lovely people to spend every day with all day. I had a really nice time getting to know Alec. I’ve been such a huge fan of his for so long and I think he’s wonderful.

Jesse Eisenberg: from Facebook to Broadway, passing by Woody Allen

Not entirely sure if this is new or not. I got it from translation so it may not make any sense!

Question of obligation after Fincher’s film: what relationship you have with social networks?

“I do not care, the last thing I would do at the end of the day is go home and put the computer to tell everything I’ve done, seen, said. Maybe they’d use if you were not an actor and I had already a good media exposure. But I know that there are profiles with my name. They are frauds that make me a bad impression. Every time someone tells me “but as I had made an appointment and then did not you see.” Eh, I did not come because it was not me that I’ve given you. ”

You have known women seductively dangerous as one sung by Ellen Page in the movie?

“I’ve encountered, but let me knock on wood as I say, I’ve never fallen. But I’m not so naive as my character in the film, otherwise I do not know how it would end for me. In general, however, believe that in love one is condemned to learn the hard way, smashing his head should not be learned otherwise. Also because usually the advice you give on the subject are disastrous. ”

Allen preferred to leave open an explanation on his character, without giving its interpretation with respect to the relationship you have in the movie with Alec Baldwin. You like to see: you’re the same person at a distance of time or Baldwin is a kind of Jiminy Cricket?

“I saw Alec as my older brother who gives advice that you know is right but you find them boring and not just listen. The classic type that bothers you because you know he’s right. Woody was too hazy to me, but as an actor I had to give some explanations to give consistency to the character and this thesis of his older brother convinced me more than all. ”

The film also talks about fame, though not in your episode. What is your relationship with success?

“Well when you start this work you think” all I need to get to a level of economic security to be happy “, but then when you get there are other reasons for 1000 to be compassionate and sad. Woody uses art as a distraction, therefore, continues to make a film after another, but I am writing stage plays. They recently finished replicas of Asuncion at Cherry Lane Theatre in New York and soon get myself to write a new play to be represented next year. ” ( Photo Tiziana Fabi / AFP / Getty Images )
