Rio soared to the top spot at the box office for a second week, making it the top-grossing release of 2011 so far, Box Office Mojo reports.
The Fox animated film, featuring the voices of Anne Hathaway and Jesse Eisenberg, took in $26.8 million in its second weekend, bringing its worldwide total to $286 million. Rio fended off new release Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Big Happy Family, which brought in $25.8 million and took second place for the weekend.
Newcomer Water for Elephants, starring Reese Witherspoon and Robert Pattinson, took third place with $17.5 million.
Even with a slight Easter holiday boost, Hop fell to fourth place with $12.5 million. Scream 4 scared up another $7.2 million, finishing in fifth place for the weekend.
Disney documentary African Cats, narrated by Samuel L. Jackson, debuted in the sixth spot, making $6.4 million.
Rounding out the top 10: Soul Surfer (No. 7, $5.6 million), Insidious (No. 8, $5.4 million), Hanna (No. 9, $5.3), Source Code (No. 10, $5.1 million).
