‘The Double’ to start shooting in London May 20th

Principal photography on The Double, the second feature from writer/director Richard Ayoade (Submarine), will commence on Sunday 20th May. Inspired by Dostoyevsky’s novella of the same name, The Double is a comedy written by Ayoade and Avi Korine (Mister Lonely), a funny and frightening story about an insignificant man driven to near breakdown by the appearance of his doppelganger.

The Double stars Jesse Eisenberg (The Social Network, Zombieland), Mia Wasikowska (Jane Eyre, Alice in Wonderland), Wallace Shawn (Toy Story, Vanya on 42nd Street), Yasmin Paige (Submarine, Wondrous Oblivion), Noah Taylor (upcoming Lawless, Submarine) and James Fox (Sherlock Holmes, The Remains of the Day). The Double is produced by Amina Dasmal & Robin Fox (Alcove Entertainment) with co-producer Andy Stebbing.

An Alcove Entertainment Production presented by Film4 and BFI in association with Protagonist Pictures, The Double is co-produced by Attercop Productions and MC Pictures and was co-developed by Alcove Entertainment & Film4. Shooting will take place in London for 9 weeks. International sales will be handled by Protagonist Pictures. The film will be released by Studiocanal in the UK.

Simon is a timid man, scratching out an isolated existence in an indifferent world. He is overlooked at work, scorned by his mother, and ignored by the woman of his dreams. He feels powerless to change any of these things. The arrival of a new co-worker, James, serves to upset the balance. James is both Simon’s exact physical double and his opposite – confident, charismatic and good with women. To Simon’s horror, James slowly startilm4s taking over his life.

Richard Ayoade’s debut feature was the much-lauded Submarine, winner of the Jury Grand Prix at Giffoni Film Festival in 2011, and Best Screenplay at the 2011 BIFA awards. With a background in music promos and a concert film of The Arctic Monkeys at The Apollo, Ayoade is also well-known in the UK as the director and co-creator of spoof horror comedy ‘Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace’ and for playing ‘Moss’ in the Emmy Award-winning ‘IT Crowd’.

Jesse Eisenberg made his screen debut in the TV series ‘Get Real’, followed by film roles in Roger Dodger, The Squid and The Whale and The Education of Charlie Banks. His breakthrough role came in Zombieland (2009), and, in 2010, he was nominated for Best Actor at the Golden Globes and Academy Awards for his role of the Facebook creator Mark Zuckerberg in the film The Social Network. He has also starred in Holy Rollers, Rio (as the voice of Blu) and 30 Minutes or Less. His upcoming films include Woody Allen’s To Rome with Love, Louis Leterrier’s Now You See Me and Noah Baumbach’s While We’re Young.

Mia Wasikowska came to prominence in 2010 after starring as ‘Alice’ in Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland and appearing in The Kids Are All Right, for which she received the Hollywood Awards’ Breakthrough Actress Award. The following year, she portrayed the title character in Cary Fukunaga’s adaptation of Jane Eyre, and starred in Gus Van Sant’s Restless and Rodrigo Garcia’s Albert Nobbs. Her upcoming films include Lawless (John Hillcoat), Stoker (Park Chan-wook) and Madame Bovary (Sophie Barthes).
